

Born January 2nd, 1944, in Callao, Peru, he was a son of the late Manuel Salvador Hernandez Lavagna and Paula Portal Gomez. He attended Colegio Salesiano Don Bosco in Callao, Peru. Following his education, he began working as a funeral home administrator. In 1987, he moved his family to the U.S.A, establishing residency in New York City and later relocating to Upstate New York where he pursued his career in carpentry. Thanks to his lifetime friend of 37 years, Rogerio Gomes, he found his destination in Charlotte, NC where he became a business owner and retired in 2015.
As a teen, Manuel joined the brotherhood of carriers for San Martin de Porras and was a faithful carrier. When moving to New York, he joined St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Monticello, NY where he became a Eucharistic member and in 1990, he became a parishioner of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Charlotte, NC.
The joy of Manuel’s life was his family. He was a faithful and devoted husband to his wife, Carmen “Rosi” Hernandez whom he married December 20th, 1974. He was also a devoted father, grandfather, and
great-grandfather who attended school activities, sports, etc.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carmen Rosa Hernandez; 2 children, Carmen Chandler (Charles) of NC, Melissa Hernandez (Ivan) of NC; 6 grandchildren, Julia, Danissa, Brycen, Damian, Pierce, and Avrie; 1 beloved great-granddaughter, Remi; as well as his sister, Gloria Delgado (Carlos) and Sergio Hernandez (Lucy) both of Peru.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Pedro Luis Hernandez Portal, Felix Rolando Hernandez Portal, David Dante Hernandez Portal, Pablo Raul Hernandez Portal and Jorge Roberto Hernandez Portal.
A visitation for Manuel will be held Monday, September 15th, 2025, from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm at McEwen Funeral Service, Inc. – Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28210. A Mass of Christian Burial will occur Tuesday, September 16th, 2025, at 10:30 am at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 8015 Ballantyne Commons Pkwy., Charlotte, NC 28277, followed by a committal service at York Memorial Cemetery, 5300 S. Tryon St., Charlotte, NC 28217.
