She was the youngest of seven children: brothers Royal, Frank, June, Clarence, and sisters Felma and Celeste. Her mother passed away when she was only a few months old. Their strong Catholic faith and loving support from family and friends helped to raise Marie to be strong, determined, and fiercely independent. She had a deep devotion to the Blessed Mother Mary as a mother figure in her life. She said the rosary daily and frequent novenas.
She moved to Los Angeles, CA to live with her brother Royal and his family. Through mutual family members, she met and married Clarence on June 28, 1947.
Marie was a devoted mother to Chester, Veronica, Joseph, Magdalen (Maggie), Annamaria, and Patrick. They grew up knowing the love of Jesus and attended church every Sunday. Her faith in God was evident and she had a joy that was contagious. In addition to raising her own children, she took care of numerous nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.
Having grown up in the segregated South, she refused to let prejudice limit her future. There was no room for hatred, and she taught her children to respect others because we are all created in God’s image. Although, neither she nor Clarence finished high school, they were determined that their six children would go to college. They both worked hard to make that happen.
Marie was a talented seamstress that made beautiful clothes for herself and her daughters. She was an exceptional homemaker and an amazing cook that loved entertaining. She loved being around people and made friends with everybody. She never met a stranger. You knew she was a Christian by the way she lived her life every day.
In October 1993, Marie and Clarence moved to Charlotte, NC following their youngest daughter, Annamaria’s job relocation. They were a tremendous help to her and Steve taking care of granddaughters Jacquelyn and Felice. Marie and Clarence joined the faith community at St. Gabriel Catholic Church where they were regulars at the daily Mass and Adoration Chapel. Marie attended Saturday Mass right up until a few weeks before her death.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, three sisters, and son, Chester. She leaves behind her loving husband of 76 years, Clarence, children: Veronica Morris (Anthony), Clarence Joseph, Magdalen Williams (Jerome), Annamaria Malveaux Cunningham (Steven), and Patrick, She was blessed with eight grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren.
She will be greatly missed by family and friends.
A Funeral Mass will be at St. Gabriel Catholic Church on Tuesday, June 4, 2024 at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Marie's memory be made to St. Jude and EWTN (Eternal Word Television Network).
