Born September 27, 1939 in Malden, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Schwartz. After graduating from Newton High School, Marty went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Rider College. He then honorably served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard and Coast Guard Reserves.
His sales career began in 1961 with the Superior Mills/BVD Corporation. He then went on to own a men’s accessories sales firm, DaMar Sales. Long after his age of retirement, driven by his passion for business and engaging with people, he worked for several large retailers.
Marty was a friend to all. He believed in honesty, hard work, doing the right thing, serving others and his community and had an unbridled love of family. He lived life to its fullest as an eternal optimist and always viewed the cup as half full. He was an inspiration to all who knew him.
Throughout his life, religion and serving his community played key roles. As an active member of Temple Beth Am in Randolph, Massachusetts, Marty served in many capacities including President, Board of Directors member, chairman of various fundraising efforts, singing in the temple choir and chairing the membership and retention committee.
In later years, he found joy, enrichment and a strong spiritual connection with the congregation and religious leaders at Temple Emanuel in Newton, Massachusetts.
The joy of Marty’s life was his family. He adored his wife of 54 years, the former Frieda Gold, his college sweetheart. In addition to Frieda, he is also survived by his children, Marci Grebstein (Jay) of Davidson, NC and David Schwartz (Beth) of Germantown, TN; and four beloved grandchildren Alex and Jenna Grebstein and Jake and Will Schwartz; as well as sister, Edith Tall and brother, Edward Schwartz.
He served as president of the Chestnut Ridge Condo Association in Franklin, MA for three years and both he and Frieda were involved with the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life for 17 years.
He enjoyed spending time as an avid reader, playing and watching golf, gardening and bird watching.
Funeral will be held on Sunday, February 5, 2017 at 1:00 pm at Hebrew Cemetery, 1801 Statesville Avenue, Charlotte, NC followed by graveside service. There will be a reception after the service in the Memorial Building.
The family expresses deepest appreciation to Dr. Michael Grunwald, the team at the Levine Cancer Institute in Charlotte, NC and the staff at Levine & Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, NC for their professional excellence and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Marty’s name to either of these worthy organizations.
