

Mary Hazel graduated from Berea College with a BA in education, and a Master’s in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Miss Hatchette taught English for over forty years; most of these were spent at Myers Park High School until her retirement in 1988. Mary Hazel was a 48-year member of the Kappa Chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, where she served as past president. She was a lifetime member of the National Education Association and the North Carolina Association of Educators, serving as past president of the local chapter, as well as on the Board of Directors.
She was a Godly woman who served the Lord faithfully and joyfully. Mary Hazel was a longtime member of First Baptist Church, where taught adult Sunday school for many years. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, traveling, and most of all, spending time with her family. Her favorite holiday was Christmas, and she took great delight in sharing her beautifully decorated Christmas tree and Santa collection with neighbors and friends. Mary Hazel will be greatly missed.
Mary Hazel was preceded in death by her brother, Buck Hatchette; sister, Norma Kibler; and nephews, Bill Kibler and Kirk Kibler.
Left to cherish her memory are nieces, Lynne Greene and husband Jim and Amy Fletcher; nephew, Chuck Hatchette and wife Ansie; as well as great and great-great-nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Sharon Towers for their love and care of Miss Hatchette, whom they affectionately called "the professor".

Visitation will be held at 4 pm on Friday, November 27 at Sharon Towers. A graveside service will be held 3 pm Sunday, November 29 at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg, SC, with the Reverend Michael Cummings officiating.
