Mary Anne (Samonds) Kane passed away on March 1, 2024, at Presbyterian Hospital (Main), Charlotte, NC. She was surrounded by a number of family members and an old friend at the time of her passing. She is survived by her husband of over 25 years, John Patrick (JP) Kane; her brothers, Mark (Milia), David (Debbie), and John (Katie), as well as her sister, Amy (Suzy), and numerous nieces and nephews, along with many grandnieces and grandnephews. Mary also leaves behind her beloved cats, now in the care of her husband, JP.
Mary grew up in Charlotte, NC, and attended South Meck and Myers Park for high school (class of 1971), then attended CPCC for a couple of years before completing her college degree at UNC-Chapel Hill (class of 1975), being graduated with a BFA. As her degree indicates, Mary was an exceptional artist. A good bit of her work history was in engraving which she did professionally, and also for family when requests were made.
Mary was also a fine seamstress, a skill she employed for family, as well as for members of the Star Trek Community in which she was a very active member.
Mary was the founding Registration Chair for Con-Carolina, for 15 years from 2001 -2016.
Mary was a founding of the USS Hornet a chapter in Starfleet International. She joined Starfleet on September 15, 1985.
She was recognized with Lifetime Membership and promoted to Admiral at the International Conference in Dallas Texas in August of 2013.
Mary and John Patrick attended 10 Starfleet International Conferences. Together in places like New Orleans, Dallas Tx , Olive Branch Ms, Minneapolis MN, Louisville KY, Greensboro NC, Sequoyah State Park, Wagoner, Oklahoma, Mount Poconos Pa.
Mary and John Patrick covered a large part of the USA, seeing STARFLEET and Con friends in their travels.
Mary was an avid supporter of Keith Harkin after seeing him perform with Celtic Thunder and supported him with his Solo career by attending Stageit and Live concerts and made many friends with other Keith Harkin fans.
Mary and her husband also traveled, from their honeymoon in Hawaii to England, Scotland, and Ireland, to New Zealand, JP's home country.
In addition to the above, Mary was a lifelong Episcopalian, and attended Holy Comforter Episcopal Church in Charlotte for decades. Mary was a member of the choir all of her years at Holy Comforter, and was a virtual host of the church services at the time of her death.
In the communities in which Mary was active, from church to STARFLEET, Mary was much beloved. She will be sorely missed by her husband, her family, her church, and her community.
We are certain that she is now singing in the choir along with our parents, in Heaven.
"Live long and prosper," our dear sister!
The Memorial Service for Mary will be held at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church, 2701 Park Road, Charlotte, NC, April 12, 2024 at 2:00pm. Reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations are welcome for the American Heart Association (heart.org).
