Mary R McGowan

Mary is survived by her children, Robert W. McGowan of Charlotte, NC and Elsie McGowan Kittrell and husband Rod of Roswell, Georgia, daughter in law, Toni B. McGowan of Dunwoody, Georgia, her pride and joy eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren, brother James Reeves of Spartanburg, SC, sister Elizabeth Ivey of Gaffney, SC and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Mack D. McGowan of Charlotte, NC, her son, Donald P. McGowan of Dunwoody, Georgia, her daughter in law, Diane W. McGowan of Charlotte, NC, her brother Robert Reeves of Greenville, SC and her parents, Charles and Louise Reeves of Woodruff, SC.

Mary was born on June 12, 1923 in Jonesville, SC, and was the eldest of four children. She was an extremely devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and homemaker. Her two greatest loves were her family and her church. She and husband, Mack, were founding members of Park Road Baptist Church where she was a Deacon and lovingly served the church in numerous capacities for over sixty-six years. She prepared Wednesday night supper meals until she was eighty-five and sang in the choir until she was eighty-nine. Mary had a green thumb and enjoyed gardening and flowers. She loved singing in the church choir, treasured any interaction with children of all ages and especially enjoyed cooking meals for family gatherings and was best known for her famous pound cake. The last eleven years were spent with her faithful companion, Daisy, a poodle that she rescued.

The family genuinely appreciates the loving and wonderful care provided by her caregivers, Vernell, Willie and Ms. Daisy. She will be truly missed but never forgotten.

A celebration of life service will be held at Park Road Baptist Church on Sunday, November 12, 2017 at 2:00 pm with a reception for family and friends directly following the service. Expressions of sympathy may be conveyed through flowers or a donation in her memory to Park Road Baptist Church.
