Mary Ann Haley Poole was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana on June 8, 1925 to Grace Mungen Haley and Daniel Robert Haley. Her parents preceded her in death as did her only sibling, Daniel M Haley, who was shot down over Toulouse, France during WWII. She is survived by her 6 children: Debora Howard (Frank) of Winston-Salem NC, Michael Poole, MD (Anita) of Savannah GA, Dave Poole (Gayle) of Midland NC, Mindy Chebaut (Bob) of Mt Holly NC, Lisa Poole of Whitsett NC, and James Poole III (Terri) of Fort Mill SC, Susan Perry Poole of Thomasville Ga, and grandchildren Michael Poole (Erika) with great-grandchildren Daniel and Christopher of Herndon VA, TJ Poole (Anne) of Medford MA, Katie Chastain (Scott) with great-grandchildren Perry and Reece of Thomasville, GA, and Michelle Hermansen (John) of Thomasville, GA. She died August 25, 2016.
Mary was an alumna and lifetime supporter of St Scholastica Academy of Chicago. Upon marrying, she moved to Chapel Hill NC to start a family and ended up moving the young family to Charlotte in 1958. She began working for the Nalle Clinic the next year and was later employed by Baxter-Travenol as their first female pharmaceutical sales rep from 70’-79’ and then she managed the Cabarrus Clinic for Women until 1981. In 1995 Mary retired at the age of 70 after having been the Administrator of Charlotte Neurosurgical Associates for many years. She was a member of the retired Pharmaceutical Reps as well as the Charlotte area Medical Group Manager Associates. She served on the boards of Carmel Hollow and The Village of Troon Homeowner Associations.
Mary Poole was a true trailblazer for women in the workforce beginning in the 70’s and up until she retired. She was the epitome of a matriarch in every sense of the word. With her work ethic, respect for others, and quick wit she instilled a high sense of pride and worth to her family as well as the others around her, it was like she was “contagious”. Mary was fun to be around and was the type of person that once you met her, you did not forget her quickly, if ever. She was never just Mary, she was Mary Poole. Other things she enjoyed were playing bridge, being with the Loonie-Troonies, entertaining, attending Mass and telling her wonderful stories. She lived a very full and active life leaving quite the legacy for her family to cherish and honor.
A Mass and Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 1pm at St Matthews Catholic Church on Ballantyne Common Parkway of Charlotte in the Daily Mass Chapel. Visitation will be at noon. The family would like to thank Brighton Gardens, Carmel Place, Carrington Place, and Community Home Care and Hospice for all their help and support. Memorials may be sent to St Matthews Catholic Church, 8015 Ballantyne Commons Parkway, P.O. Box 49349 Charlotte, NC 28277.
