He delighted in life’s simple joys, like swinging at the park (on a beautiful or rainy day), watching trains, listening to music, enjoying a cold can of Coke, and spending time surrounded by his friends and family. He touched so many lives and inspired others along the way. Even after death, he continues to change lives through the successful donation of his organs to three recipients.
Matthew is survived by his mother, Kirsten Roeback Hampy, and her partner, Kevin King, of Charlotte, North Carolina; his brother, Mitchell Hampy, and his wife, Morgan, of Charlotte; his sister, Halle Hampy, and her husband, Arjun Earthperson, of Raleigh; his dear Nanny, Marilyn North Roeback of Erie, Pennsylvania, and his grandmother, Patricia Renshaw of Fairview, Pennsylvania. He also leaves behind his especially beloved cousins, Megan Marzka, Ava Byrum, and Kelley Shaffer, of Charlotte.
For 18 years, Matthew was blessed by the devoted care of Tracy Davis and her family, Quida, Savi, and Hakeem Akande, along with his favorite dancing partner and grandmother by choice, Cleora Taylor.
Tracy believed Matthew to have no limitations and provided him with a life of adventure, fun, and new experiences.
The family is also deeply grateful to Matthew’s Care Providers and their families—BJ Morgan and Mrs. White; Rusty and Kip Trimble; and Mike Pucket—for their infinite love, kindness, and care for Matthew.
One of Matthew’s favorite words to sign was “Church.” He enjoyed attending Mass and worship services, was a member of Saint Thomas Aquinas Church, and was regularly welcomed by the church families of The Village Chapel Community and Truth Redemption Church.
He was surrounded throughout his life by the love, support, and prayers of his many aunts, uncles, and cousins in Erie, Pennsylvania, and beyond.
Matthew was preceded in death by his father, Gary J. Hampy; his uncles, Dana and Jason Roeback and David Hampy; his grandfathers, Lee Ronald Roeback and James P. Renshaw; and his littlest cousin, Walter Smith, all of whom we hold close in our hearts.
A funeral Mass for Matthew will be held at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Charlotte, NC, on Oct. 3 at 4:00 PM. Visitation will be from 3:30 to 4:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the Hampy family would appreciate donations toward a meaningful gift for Matthew’s Care Providers. The family is eternally grateful to them.
