

Upon graduating from the University of North Carolina in 1954, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. On December 27, 1954 he wed his college sweetheart, Joan Marie Conner, with whom he recently celebrated their 59th anniversary. They settled in North Wilkesboro, where he was employed by Lowe's Home Centers from 1957 until his retirement 1982 as Senior Vice President of Marketing.
In his retirement he enjoyed spending time with his family, golfing, traveling, serving on numerous boards and volunteer work. He was the local President of the Red Cross, served on the Board at Piedmont Federal, and Chairman of the Board at the Grandfather Home for Children. He also served as guardian ad litem and as a mentor.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Conner Brown; sons, Michael David Brown and his wife Heather of Charleston, SC, and Neil Conner Brown of Charlotte; brothers, Douglas C. Brown of Columbia, SC and Clarence F. Brown, Jr. of Seattle, WA; and eleven nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Diana R. Brown who passed away in August 2012. .
A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Brown will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at Westminster Presbyterian Church with Reverend Trevor Smith officiating. Inurnment in the church columbarium will be private. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
