

Mildred Kirby Johnson, 98 passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, July 3, 2025. Mildred was born on October 17, 1926, in Belmont, NC. She was the daughter of William Birt Kirby and Rachel Smith Kirby. She was a homemaker until her children were grown, then worked at Lance Foods for many years, retiring in 1991.
Mildred is survived by daughter, Dixie Sullivan and son, Jeff Johnson; brother, Bert Kirby and wife, Margaret of Simpsonville, SC; sister, Shirley Lawing of Charlotte, NC; Grandsons, Doug Alexander (Angie), Clay Johnson (Holly), granddaughter, Lindsi Jones (Michael) and daughter-in-law, Faye Johnson. She also leaves behind thirteen great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and lifelong friends. In addition to her parents, Mildred was preceded in death by her son Roy Lee Johnson, beloved daughter-in-law, Jeanna Johnson, five brothers; Boyce, Dan, Richard, Jack and Bill Kirby and sisters, June Helms, Gertie Sanderson and Frances Kirby.
Mildred was very compassionate and loved unconditionally, never meeting a stranger. She had a great sense of humor and enjoyed making people smile. She was the most gracious hostess, making everyone who visited her home feel like it was their own. Mildred was the best cook, always leaving family and friends looking forward to her next home-cooked meal. Truly a one in a million Mother, Memaw, Sister, Aunt and Friend.
The family would like to thank the staff at Shelby Manor for their compassionate care of Mildred. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital (www.stjude.org) or to the donor's charity of choice. A service to celebrate Mildred’s wonderful life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 19 in the chapel of McEwen Funeral Service at 5716 Monroe Road in Charlotte, with visitation and a light lunch following the service.
