Nancy Louise Jewell Dulin passed peacefully into the arms of her savior on the night of Sunday, March 26th after a year-long battle with brain cancer. She would like to thank her friends, family, and caregivers for their overwhelming support.
Nancy was preceded in death by her mother (Edwina Edna Lemon Jewell) and her father (Murray Douglas Jewell). She is survived by her husband of 32 years (Charles "Bob" Robert Dulin), son (Christopher Robert Dulin), daughter-in-law (Michelle Aileen Dulin), daughter (Lindsay Caroline Dulin), grandchildren (Kaitlyn Leigh Dulin and Chloe Rose Dulin), her sister (Cathy Ryan), and a number of aunts and cousins.
Born on August 27th 1956 in Toronto, Ontario, Nancy grew up and attended nursing school in Brantford. In 1978 after becoming an RN, she moved to Charlotte, NC to begin her 38-year career at Carolinas Medical Center. In 2008 she returned to school to earn her BSN at UNCC. In 2009 she completed her MSN at Queens University despite undergoing treatment for parotid gland cancer.
During her nursing career she was a pediatric nurse, the NPCN nurse manager, and finally developed and led the Infant Apnea Program. She got to know everyone at the hospital from doctors down to the environmental services folks. She made a lasting impact in the lives of thousands of infants, children, and their parents bringing her much joy and happiness. In 2010 she was recognized with the highest honor from Carolinas Healthcare – the Pinnacle Award – which “validates the extraordinary service delivered while supporting the mission of CHS.”
Prior to her diagnosis she began teaching part time at ECPI and made such an impact that a number of her students were in her life until the end. She enjoyed it so much that she was even contemplating a move into teaching so that she could pass her gift to the next generation of nurses.
Exercise was a big part of her life. After losing over 100 pounds in the early 2000s, Nancy transformed herself into an athlete. She learned to ice skate, ran 5k races, took up swimming and cycling, and finally participated in competitive triathlons.
Her grandchildren were the most important thing in her life. She loved doing Nana things like baking and bath time. Leaving them was the most difficult part of her passing.
Though she was in Charlotte and eventually became an American citizen, she would often return to Canada to visit with family and friends. In 2009 she reconnected with her high school friends and maintained those friendships to the end. She had big travel plans for retirement but was able to learn Italian and travel to Italy a few years ago.
She had close friends everywhere she went. Whether it was Canada, Italy, Charlotte, California, and especially in New Hampshire, the Nancy Dulin fan club had an office everywhere.
As a nurse and in her life she always thought of others before herself. As the days grew short she often felt that, in a way, the terminal cancer was a blessing as she became aware of how many lives she had touched. She gave thanks because she was blessed throughout her life. Nancy Dulin loved and was loved by all.
The visitation will be held Thursday March 30, 2017 from 6pm to 8pm at McEwen in Pineville (10500 Park Rd. Charlotte NC 28210). The funeral will be held on Friday, March 31, 2017 at 2pm at the Zoar Rd. location of Good Shepherd (13611 Zoar Rd, Charlotte, NC 28278).
