Born on August 24, 1936, in Buffalo, New York to Edith and Benson, Nancy was the daughter of a hardworking family and carried those values throughout her life. In 1958, she married the love of her life, John Hajnos. Together, they traveled across the country for John’s work as a chemical salesman before settling in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Nancy enjoyed a long and varied career, beginning at Westinghouse Electric and later working at Ivey’s and The Virkler Company, where she served as a Production Controller until her retirement in 1998. She was known among her colleagues for her sharp mind, quick wit, and a coffee habit that kept the pot perpetually empty.
She was an engaged member of the Charlotte community, playing bridge regularly, staying active at the Harris YMCA, volunteering as a timer at Mecklenburg Aquatic Club and Fairmeadows Swim Club swim meets, serving as a polling judge each election year, and attending St. John’s Episcopal Church.
She was an avid football fan—staying true to her roots in cheering for the Buffalo Bills, visiting her sons on campus for an occasional NC State Wolfpack game, and attending Charlotte Catholic football games for over 40 years.
After retirement, Nancy traveled the world, often with her cousin Mary Anne, going to all the continents, except Antarctica (she always did hate the cold), bringing back photos of proof—walking the Great Wall of China, parasailing in South America, and riding horses in Australia.
Her legacy is one of love, laughter, and a spirited candor that made her unforgettable. She will be missed deeply but remembered always. Nancy will especially be remembered by her grandchildren for her cookies; each of them had a favorite, and she always made extras depending on who was visiting, and she turned a blind eye as they were snuck out of the tin and eaten before dinnertime.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Edith and Benson, and her husband, John. She is survived by her children, Larry (Kathryn), Michael (late partner Rose), and Edward (Jennifer); her grandchildren, Elizabeth (Michael Sebian), Ashley, Natalie (Christopher Bader), John (Giela), Lauren (Scott Aberle), Morgan (Ian Kast), Sarah, and Samuel; and great-grandchildren, Anastasia, Aloysius, and Nathaniel Sebian; Jamison and Ainsley Bader; Adesza and Romy Hajnos; Ethan, Victoria, Tanner, and Jace Aberle; Ava and Liam Kast; and Timothy Hajnos. She is also survived by her beloved cousin and travel companion, Mary Anne Isenberg.
Visitation and memorial service will be held at McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park on Wednesday, June 18 at 11:00 AM, with burial at Sharon Memorial Park Cemetery immediately after; reception to follow.
