

She was born February 8, 1925 and was the daughter of the late Gladys Palmer Stitt Fickling and Richard Battle Stitt. Her maternal grandparents were Edna Wright Palmer and Charles Vernon Palmer. Paternal grandparents were Carolina Battle Stitt and William Morrison Stitt.
Nancy was educated in the Charlotte city schools and a graduate of Central High. She attended Queens College with membership in the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She was a member of the Charlotte Junior League and an organizing participant in the Charlotte Miniature Society. She belonged to the Mint Museum Friends and Auxiliary, and was an active member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.
Survivors include her husband, James H. Hillis; two sons, Edmund H. Hillis of Greensboro and Charles P. Hillis of Charlotte, NC. She has four grandsons, James C. Hillis of Greenville, SC, Brandon P. Hillis of Winston-Salem, NC, Palmer S. Hillis of Nashville, TN, and Tyler H. Thompson of Detroit, MI. In November 2008, her daughter, Allyson N. Hillis lost her battle with pancreatic cancer.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 115 W. 7th St. at North Tryon, Charlotte. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sharon Towers, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church or Ally’s House in Burnsville, NC, a child advocacy foundation set up in honor of her late daughter, Allyson Nancy Hillis (P.O. Box 806, Burnsville, NC 28714).
