

She was born on the 9th of May, 1923, in Charlotte, NC. Mrs. Shaw was a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was devoted to her family. She spent her early adulthood as a housewife taking care of her home and family in her uniquely creative way. She was predeceased by her beloved father, Nathan Montigue Sharp, and her beloved mother, Annie Blanche Crane Sharp; her dear aunts, Elizabeth (Polly) Johnson, and Lydia Crane at the family farm in Waxhaw; her dear uncles, Lester Crane at the farm, and Charlie Crane of Waxhaw; her husbands, Charles Barton, Sr. (The father of her children.), John Watson, and Edward Shaw; and her adored son, Charles (Chuck) Barton, Jr.; her precious friend since elementary school, Margaret Hunter Shaw and Margaret’s brother, Jeep Hunter (Pat).
She was survived by her cherished family including daughter, Nancy B. Sharp of Charlotte; son, Jon Barton (Kathy) of Davidson, NC, and granddaughters, Sherrad Barton of Boston, MA; Meredith Miles (Perry) of Richmond, VA; Audrey Hitt, of Charlotte; Lauren Sherman of Denver, CO; and Dana Barton of Charlotte; great-grandchildren, Caroline Miles, John Miles, Addison Hitt, Peyton Hitt, and Taylor Hitt; cousins Helen Crane, and her daughter, Charlene Carter; step daughter, Peggy Hardee (Gwynn) of Loris, SC; step granddaughter, Courtney Hagreen.
Mrs. Shaw graduated as Valedictorian from Harding High School where she was voted “Most Likely to Succeed”. After high school, she worked at City Savings Bank. She continued to be involved in the Harding Alumni Association and worked for decades to help arrange their meetings and attend their activities.
After marrying and staying home with her children for several years, she worked for quite a lot of years at First Union as a temporary employee, an ever-independent woman staying a temporary employee. She was able to take off when she wanted to spend time the way she wanted and to travel. Even though she was a temporary employee – her First Union family did not want to lose her. When she left First Union they gave her a full-fledged retirement party.
She worked as a docent at the Mint Museum and Hezekiah Alexander House, where she met Susan Neal, her esteemed lifelong friend. Volunteering was an important part of her life.
She was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church where she attended regularly and was a dedicated circle lifetime member for many years until her illness. She had previously been a member of
United Hawthorne Lane Methodist for decades.
At Aldersgate, she served when she was still able, in the library, the general store, and the monthly birthday celebrations. She treasured her new friends at Aldersgate and especially her friend, Lavada Freeman.
She loved to sew. She was always sewing as long as she was able. Sewing was such an integral part of her daily life that she began helping her great aunts in their sewing cottage business as a child. Family and friends were so blessed to be showered with endless amounts of custom clothes, pillows, T-shirt blankets, etc. that she would spend many hours creating and bestowing on so many.
On Monday, June 12th, 2023 the family will receive friends at 10:AM at McEwen Funeral Services, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC. A service celebrating Mrs. Shaw’s life will follow at 11:00 AM. The interment will be at Sharon Memorial Park after the service.
