Polly Buice Anglin, 84, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on June 18, 2025, after a long illness. She was born on December 7, 1940, in Rock Hill, SC to John Irving and Elizabeth Spigener Buice. She spent an idyllic childhood in Hickory Grove, SC, where she played Varsity Women’s Basketball all 4 years and graduated Valedictorian in 1958. After high school, she went to Winthrop College (now University) as a legacy student, majoring in Elementary and Christian Education. She graduated in 1962, and also like her mother, became a teacher.
Polly loved adventure, and upon finishing college, took a teaching job in Beaufort, SC. She moved into an apartment with several other teachers, one of whom was named Libby. Though they initially didn’t like each other, they soon became best friends, and that friendship lasted the next 60+ years, taking them next to Atlanta, GA to teach for 3 years. Every summer, Polly and Libby would go on a trip, two of the most notable being a several weeks long cross-country trip in Polly’s Mercury Montego and to Daytona, FL to see the Apollo 10 take off.
Polly and Libby moved to Charlotte in 1967, where Polly taught 2nd grade at Barringer Elementary, and in the fall of 1969, met the love of her life, Troy Anglin. They were married on June 20, 1970, and spent the next nearly 50 years in a marriage of love and total devotion, raising their children, serving their churches, travelling, and in later years, doting on their 4 grandchildren. Polly lost Troy in March of 2020, and even with dementia setting in, never stopped loving him.
Over the course of her 30+ year teaching career in Charlotte, Polly took some time off to raise her children, and taught preschool at Incarnation Lutheran and St Andrews Methodist churches. When she returned to CMS, she taught primarily kindergarten and 1st grades at Sedgefield, Allen Brook, and finally, Lake Wylie Elementary, from which she retired in 2001. In 1991, Polly was named CMS Teacher of the Year, and in recognition of excellence in Science Education, a tiled wall with her handprint still stands at Discovery Place Museum.
Polly was a gifted storyteller. In addition to the hundreds of children she taught in public school, she inspired faith in adults and children alike with her devotionals and Sunday School lessons at First Christian and SouthPark Christian churches. Once she became a grandmother, she also went to her grandchildren’s classrooms and told many fantastic stories, usually in character costumes. Polly was a happy, positive, joy of a person and her family will miss her the rest of their days.
In addition to her parents and husband, Troy, Polly is preceded in death by her sister, Nancy Brown. She is survived by her son, Travis Anglin (Sheree) of Charlotte; daughter, Beth Garland (Rickey) of Hampstead, NC; grandchildren, Alex Chaney and Emma, Sadie, and Cooper Garland; many beloved nieces and nephews, and her best friend, Libby Cone.
There will be a visitation for Polly on Monday, June 23, 2025 from 11 am – 1 pm at McEwen Funeral Service - Pineville Chapel, followed by a graveside service at Crown Memorial Park at 2 pm.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Alzheimer’s Association in memory of the incredible life of Polly Anglin.
