Renee Marie Fothergill was born in Harlem, NYC on February 24, 1957, to Eustace and Jean Fothergill. She went home to be with her lord on January 26, 2025 in NC. Renee lived a vibrant life filled with love, laughter, and a touch of diva flair.
Renee built a successful career as an accountant in the container shipping industry, working with major companies like Maersk Sealand , CMG also as a NYC correction officer and with Geraldo Rivera as his executive assistant for the tv show. Her sharp mind and strong work ethic earned her the respect of her colleagues, but it was her larger-than-life personality that truly set her apart.
Renee had a deep and unwavering faith in God, which guided her throughout her life. In 1998 she moved from New York to Virginia where she became a devoted member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Norfolk, Virginia, where she answered her spiritual calling and became an evangelist. Her love for the Lord was evident in the way she lived—always sharing words of encouragement, offering prayers for those in need, and spreading God’s love through her actions. She found strength and purpose in her faith, and her devotion inspired those around her. She later moved to North Carolina where she continued her ministry at New Beginnings church and inherited more life-long friendships.
Whether in church or in everyday life, Renee’s spirit shined brightly as she walked with God, leaving a legacy of faith, love, and kindness for all who knew her. She was a woman of impeccable style, Renee was always dressed to impress, with her nails flawlessly done to match every outfit. She had a fierce, fun-loving spirit and never missed an opportunity to celebrate life. Whether she was dancing the night away or sharing laughs with family and friends, she brought energy and joy wherever she went.
Renee’s greatest pride and joy were her family. She was a devoted wife to the late Steven Jones, who passed in 2008, and she carried his love with her always. She leaves behind her two loving daughters, Shatora and Alana, son-in-laws Samuel and Reggie, and Nephew/Son Gerald Jr., who will forever cherish her strength, wisdom, and unconditional love. She is survived by her mother, Jean Fothergill, and brother, Gerald Fothergill. Renee had several nieces and nephews who loved her dearly, and she was a beloved grandmother to seven adoring grandchildren—Re’Quan, Jermaine, Z’Aikia, Na’Jah, Sha’mire, A’Landa, and Nasir—and recently celebrated the blessing of becoming a great-grandmother to Z’Naiyah.
Renee’s legacy of love, confidence, and unapologetic authenticity will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Renee was a shining light, a true queen with a heart of gold, powerhouse, and the life of the party. Though she may be gone, her light will never fade. Rest easy, beautiful soul.
