November 9, 1946 – June 4, 2025
Richard “Rick” Hastings, 78, of Charlotte, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, surrounded by family.
Born in Raleigh on November 9, 1946, Rick's early life reflected the values he carried throughout his lifetime—hard work, humility, and kindness. His earliest jobs included selling newspapers at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte and driving a school bus at North Mecklenburg High School where he graduated in 1964. He went on to earn his degree in Accounting from UNC Charlotte in 1968—the same year he married his college sweetheart, Beverly.
Rick was a devoted husband, proud father, and grandfather. A Certified Public Accountant, he spent the early part of his career with Peat Marwick and continued in Comptroller and Finance positions with several other firms until the early 1990s. At that point, he transitioned into homebuilding, founding Southern Heritage Construction, where his eye for detail and craftsmanship stood out.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Rick also pursued entrepreneurial ventures. He co-owned a restaurant with longtime friend Ed Humphries and later helped run Hastings Chevrolet in Clover, South Carolina, alongside his brother Tom and brother-in-law Bill Stewart. From 2000 until his retirement in 2009, he worked as a financial advisor.
Rick was a perfectionist in the very best sense. He could fix anything, was skilled with his hands, and believed in doing things right the first time. He had a deep appreciation for health and wellness and took a thoughtful, disciplined approach to life.
A longtime member of Central Church of God in Charlotte, Rick served faithfully on numerous outreach teams, including building homes for the underserved and supporting single mothers. He also traveled to Chile on a mission trip, living out his faith through service.
Rick was known for his steady presence, gentle spirit, and the way he always saw the best in people. His generosity, quiet strength, and warm sense of humor left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
He is survived by his sons, Scott Hastings and his wife Stacey, Matt Hastings and his wife Meg; his cherished grandchildren, Lily, Nathan, and Clayton; His brother Tom Hastings and sister Sylvia. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Beverly, and his parents, Boyce and Nellie Hastings
A celebration of Rick’s life will be held on Wednesday, June 11, at 12:00 a.m. at Central Church of God in Charlotte, North Carolina. Visitation will take place prior to the service beginning at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Alzheimer’s Association in Rick’s memory.
Rick’s legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the homes he built, and the unwavering example he set through a life marked by faith, purpose, and love.
