Bob was born on February 19, 1946 in Charlotte, NC. He graduated from Myers Park High School and joined the Army, serving his country with honor and courage during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he worked for the City of Charlotte. His most memorable opportunities were providing event security and meeting some of his favorite celebrities.
In his later years, Bob found profound companionship and comfort in his service dog, Max. Their bond was unmistakable—built on trust, mutual care, and quiet understanding. Max was more than an aide; he was family, a constant presence who brought stability, purpose, and joy to Bob’s daily life.
Those who knew Bob will remember his generosity, humor, and deep appreciation for simple moments—waterfall hikes, beach trips, hunting, fishing, and the loyalty of a dog who was always along for the ride.
Robert is survived by his sister Beth Capper, nephews, nieces, cousins, and by the many friends and fellow veterans whose lives he touched. He was preceded in death by his mother Justice A Birkhead, father William W Hamilton, brother William S Hamilton and sister Patricia Perry.
A celebration of Bob's life will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2026 at 11am in the chapel of McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park located at 5716 Monroe Road in Charlotte. Burial with US Army Funeral Honors immediately following at Sharon Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to K9s for Warriors or DAV (Disabled American Veterans). Condolences may be left for the family at www.McEwenPinevilleChapel.com.
Bob’s service, to his country and to those he loved, will never be forgotten.
