
Colonel Robert “Bob” Nicholas Waggoner (Ret) died November 23, 2017, in Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte. Bob was born May 26, 1934 in Salisbury. He always commented that “Salisbury was a nice place to grow up.” He graduated from Boyden High School in 1952 and Wake Forest University in 1956. He never forgot his high school coach, Joe Ferebee. Bob was very attentive to him and took great joy in arranging birthday parties and outings for “Coach” with his former players. At Wake Forest he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He played first base on the 1955 Demon Deacons' baseball team when they won the College World Series. On December 18, 1955, he married his college sweetheart, Ann Bobo Scruggs, of Rutherfordton. He served in the U.S. Army Field Artillery for 30 years. Service to his country took him through two tours in Germany, a war in Vietnam, a year in Greece, and multiple assignments scattered throughout the United States. After his retirement, he and his wife settled in Charlotte. Survivors in addition to his wife are his children: Catherine “Kippy” Waggoner Tolson and husband, James Arthur Tolson Jr. of Ashburn, Virginia; Robert Nicholas “Nick” Waggoner Jr. and wife Carol of Manassas, Virginia; and Charlotte Melene Waggoner of Blacksburg, Virginia. His grandchildren are Melene Rebecca Tolson of Ashburn and Robert “Robbie” Nicholas Waggoner III of Manassas. McEwen Funeral Services of Charlotte are in charge of arrangements. Colonel Waggoner will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C., at a later date.
