Following his graduation from Ralph R. McKee Career and Technical Education High School, Ronald joined the United States Marine Corps, from which he was honorably discharged in 1964. He married Rosetta Tyree (Conroy) in 1963. To that union was born a daughter, Eryca “Dawn” Conroy. Ronald retired from the United States Postal Service after 30+ years, and from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System where he held many positions. Ronald truly enjoyed his role as a Teacher’s Assistant where he was able to take an interactive approach in youth development. In retirement, he simultaneously worked as a Mail Handler and volunteered at the Veterans Association of Salisbury, NC.
Ronald was a calligrapher and he loved poetry. Fellow Marines often asked him to beautify their love letters with his unique penmanship. He wrote love letters, designed wedding invitations, and gift cards. Due to his public speaking and his ability to create a poem for every occasion Ronald was dubbed, “Poet Laureate.” Linked to his creative talent was his penchant for interior design. His apartment in Staten Island was featured in the magazine, Apartment Life. In addition to being a published author and playwright, Ronald was also an avid fisher, actor, artist, educator, model, singer, and dancer. He loved doo-wop music and Luther Vandross and was known for his smooth free-style dancing. As a student of African and African-American history and culture, he was a member of the activist and cultural communities in both Harlem, New York and Charlotte, NC. Ronald also managed his daughter Zurii’s storytelling and public speaking career.
He leaves to mourn his passing: Two daughters, Eryca “Dawn” Conroy, of Piscataway, New Jersey, and Zurii Conroy, of Orlando, Florida. He leaves three brothers: David Conroy of Dothan, Alabama; Charles “Corky” Conroy of Charlotte, North Carolina; and William Conroy of Staten Island, New York. His sister Charlene Conroy and brother Robert “Buzzy” Conroy preceded him in death.
Ronald Conroy was the proud grandfather of a granddaughter, Davina Atkinson, and an adored great grandfather to four: Jaydan Jefferson, Madison Glenn, Cadence Glenn, and Aubrey Jefferson, all of Queens, New York, all of whom affectionately called him “Big Daddy.” Joining the family in mourning his passing are a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, friends, and neighbors.
Ronald's family will receive friends from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 20th at McEwen Funeral Service - Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Road in Charlotte, NC. A Celebration of Life will follow at 11:00 a.m.
