He was born on August 21st, 1933 in Mecklenburg County to the late Ed Sidney Johns and Mae Snipes Johns Hunter.
Growing up in Charlotte, Roy attended public schools in the city. In his 20s, he met and married Dorothy Isbell Hargett and they went on to have five wonderful children together – Virginia, Joseph, Carol, Darryl, and Tammy.
As a young man, Roy worked at a local grocery store before taking a warehouse job at Cox Tire Machinery Co. on Morehead Street in Charlotte. Roy’s hardworking nature allowed him to work his way up the ladder, and he eventually retired as Manager in his 60s. Though he had more than earned the right to relax, he couldn’t help but continue working here and there over the years.
Though Roy’s hobbies and interests changed some over the years, he was at one time an avid hunter. He enjoyed taking hunting trips with his friends and family to places such as Pisgah Forest, NC and Black Mountain, NC. He was also known to make his own wine from time to time.
Roy could be quiet and laid back at times, but he also loved to joke around and express his friendly, sociable side. His magnetic personality allowed him to make new friends wherever he went, and every time he went to leave, people would ask when he would be back.
Roy was a proud and devoted member of the Belmont Moose Lodge where he enjoyed hanging out and singing karaoke with some of his very best friends. Roy often traveled to the beach with other members and they would always make sure to visit a local Moose Lodge or find another karaoke spot in town so they could sing together. In fact, Roy’s final night was spent singing karaoke in Ocean Isle Beach with his friends. Though losing Roy has left his family heartbroken, they are comforted knowing some of his final moments were spent doing something he enthusiastically loved.
Those left to remember Roy include his children, Virginia and husband James, Carol and husband Lewis, Darryl, and Tammy; his grandchildren, Terri, Lynsay, Jeremy, Logan, Lauren and husband Caleb, Shannon, and Jessica; his great-grandchildren, McKayla, McKenzie, and Erica; one great-great-grandchild; as well as the loving family of his late partner, Daphne, and numerous other family members and friends.
Roy is now reunited in Heaven with his parents, Ed and Mae; his step-father, Wade; his son, Joseph; his partner of over twenty years, Daphne; and his former wife and the mother of his children, Dorothy.
Friends are cordially invited to join the Johns family during a visitation from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Wednesday, December 15th, 2021 at Forest Lawn West Funeral Home, 4601 Freedom Drive in Charlotte. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, December 16th, 2021 at the funeral home and will be followed by the committal service in Forest Lawn West Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Roy’s name to Moose Lodge’s nonprofit organization, Moose Charities.
