He was born on June 12, 1939, in Columbus County, North Carolina, to the late Cornelius and Jenny Harrelson. Russell was raised working on the family farm and alongside his father in the garage, where he developed the strong work ethic and mechanical skills that stayed with him throughout his life. He was known for his creativity and resilience. Russell had a remarkable ability to fix just about anything, often with nothing more than duct tape and silicone. His garage was his sanctuary, a place where he loved to tinker, create, and solve problems.
He married the love of his life, Mary, and together they built a life centered on family. Russell was a devoted husband, a loving father to his children, Gary and Vicky, and a proud grandfather. He took great joy in supporting his family and was always their biggest encourager, offering guidance, patience, and love.
In his quieter moments, Russell enjoyed gardening and fishing, finding peace in the outdoors and satisfaction in a day well spent. He will be remembered for his ingenuity, kindness, and the steady presence he provided to those who loved him.
Russell’s legacy lives on through the family he cherished and the many lives he touched. He will be deeply missed.
In addition to his parents, Russell was predeceased by his siblings, Sarah Surles, William James Harrelson, Lavern Harrelson, Harold Dean Harrelson and Carol Stoch.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Harrelson; children, Gary Harrelson and Vicky (Jim) Stack; his grandchildren, Chase Briggs, Madison (Cade) McDonald, Chris Perkins, Tyler Perkins, and Ashley Harrelson; his great grandson, Aiden Fox; and sister, Clara Hewitt.
