Ruth was born in Monroe, NC; but became a true Charlottean when she moved

here at six years old.

She attended Harding High School and graduated 12th grade. She completed a two-year business college. After that, she went to work for an insurance agency, McPhail, Bray, & Murphy. After working there for 12 years, she took a position at Duke Power where she worked for 23 years.

Ruth’s parents were Maebelle Medlin Hill, mother, and Benjamin Curtis Hill, father.

She is survived by two children, Bill Helms, son, Cindy Helms Shepard, daughter and son-in-law, Gary E Shepard, and two grandchildren, Brian Edward Shepard and his fiancé, Carly Ellen Harvell, and Katherine Shepard Yow and her husband, Derek Yow.

Ruth was an active member of First Baptist Church Charlotte. She also sang in the adult choir for a number of years. Due to declining health, she became a member of the Homebound Bible Study Class. Prior to her death, Ruth resided at Brookdale Cotswold in Charlotte.

Bill and Cindy, along with their family, would like to thank the staff at Brookdale Cotswold and Royal Park Rehabilitation Center for their tender loving care given to our Mom.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 AM Tuesday, May 1, 2018 in the chapel of McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Rd., Charlotte, NC 28212 with Rev. Michael Cummings officiating. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends in the funeral home Tuesday for one hour prior to the service.
