She was born 3 May 1932 in Askam-in-Furness, England. In 1956, she married the late Robert Patterson, also from England. Together, they travelled the world extensively in places as far-flung as the Caribbean, Iran, Kuwait, Turkey, and Sumatra before they settled in Charlotte. Ruth made a home and friends wherever they went. People remember her pleasant English accent, soft-spoken charm, and world-class trifle.
Ruth lovingly raised two sons who survive her: Ian Patterson, wife Anne, of Davidson NC and Keith Patterson, wife Dawn, of Charlotte; and by five grandchildren – MacKenzie, Hayley, Nicholas, Alec, and Philip.
