Sallie was born to Audrey Louise Middleton Ives and Victor Leon Ives, Sr. Growing up in a military family, she attended public schools in Connecticut and Maryland. A strong athlete in high school, after graduation she decided to pursue her love for teaching and geography by earning a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana.
Upon earning her doctorate, she then took a position in the Department of Geography as an Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina Charlotte, where she thrived until her retirement in 2012 as an Associate Professor Emeritus.
Sallie was predeceased by her mother and father, her sister Bonnie Anne Ives Lowe, brother Victor Leon Ives, Jr. (“Tex”), and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. She is survived by her brother Dr. Robert W. Ives, Ph.D. and his family: wife Dr. Sujata Ives, Ph.D., daughters Raven Collins and Bryten Ives, nephew Nicholas Ives, niece Alexis Lowe, and nephew Howard McNeill.
Sallie loved teaching, reading novels, gardening, going out with friends, hers and her family’s pets and traveling, but her declining health made it difficult to get outside in the last several years. The family is especially grateful for the support provided to Sallie and to them in Sallie’s declining years by her great friends Donna and Wayne Walcott, and Paul and Kim Smith.
A celebration of life will be held from 1pm to 3pm Wednesday, May 29, 2024 at McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC 28212.
Because of her love of pets, in lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in her memory to the Greater Charlotte SPCA, or your local SPCA.
