

Mr. Prosser, 86, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on December 26, 2011 in the Harris Hospice Unit at Presbyterian Hospital. He was born on August 18, 1925 in Charlotte, a son of the late Sweney and Bea Steinback Prosser.
Sweney was a native Charlottean, born at Presbyterian Hospital. He graduated from Derita High, then joined the Navy, and served on the Destroyer Escort James E. Craig. Following his service, Sweney came home to be married, and went to work at Southern Railroad; he then worked for the Streitman Biscuit Company, Keebler, leaving there to work for Martin Seymour Sherwin Williams Paint Company. After retiring, he went to work for his son-in-law at Woodlawn Services, where he spent his last working days.
Sweney also was an original Motorman for the Charlotte Trolley, restoring, driving, and writing the safety manual for the trolley system. He was instrumental in the Patriots Point at Charleston in restoring the retired ships, and the DESA for Charlotte, NC. Sweney also was a Charlotte historian; he told his stories of life growing up in Old Charlotte to UNC-Charlotte. We will all miss his wonderful stories and sayings. He had nicknames for everyone. Sweney was known to everyone as POP.
Sweney is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Margaret Phillips Prosser of their home; children, Rebecca Prosser Hensley and husband Lee of Charlotte, Jeffrey Prosser and wife Jana of Gouldsboro, ME, and Phillip Prosser and wife Linda; grandchildren, Margaret (Bess) Hensley Lewis and husband Will of Charlotte, Rachel Hensley White and husband Doug of Charlotte, Adelaide Prosser of ME, Rebecca Roland and husband Brad, and Jessica Prosser of FL; and six great-grandchildren, Lilly, Macy, Liam, David, Samantha, and Demi. He was preceded in death by his sister, Gloria Mayer of FL.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 29, 2011 in the chapel of Harry & Bryant Company, 500 Providence Rd., Charlotte, with the Reverend Kent Schaaf officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. Interment will be private.
