Bill was born on August 29, 1930 to Buren Webber “Pete” Morgan and Alma Odom Morgan in Wellford, SC. He graduated in 1951 from Clemson University in Engineering, was enrolled in ROTC and was the first in his family to graduate college. As a US Army Veteran and proud American it is fitting that he completed his service commitment on July 4, 2023.
Bill knew something about continuity and commitment. First Lieutenant Morgan served in the Signal Corps (USASC) during the Korean War, was an exemplary employee at Duke Power for 40 years and he was married to his wife, Dot, for 63 years. He cared for her for the last ten years of her life, to his own physical detriment and loved her implicitly – always finding joy and appreciation for their life together. Bill adored his sons and in particular enjoyed weekend visits from his youngest son Dan, who clearly inherited the loyalty trait. He created a scholarship for his first born, David, at Furman University to remember his lingual contributions to the University.
Bill persevered despite chronic pain and the losses of family. He was an independent, quiet, humble man and in the last two years of life, he cultivated a community of friends at his CCRC home. He never missed monthly Men’s Lunch, acquired the venerated nickname “Bingo Bill” and the reputation of ladies’ man, as the only man at his lunch table. He actively engaged with his church family by attending virtual church at Durham Baptist and visited with Pastor Mike regularly. He was doted on by all his loyal caregivers, especially Sandra, Jenn and Mike. If kindness is doing what you can, where you are, with what you have, then kindness was Bill’s superpower.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Lucille Lawson; his son, David Morgan; and his loving wife, Dorothy Wells “Dot” Morgan. He is survived by his son, Dan Morgan of Salisbury, NC; his sister, Louise Smith of Inman, SC; nieces, Julie Buehner (John Dennis) and Lisa Milhaupt; nephew, Darren Lawson; and nine great nieces and nephews; and first cousins, Mary Powell and Bruce Johnson (Marilyn). Dan, Louise, Julie and Lisa were a constant source of inspiration, love, support and humor no matter the distance or the time.
Graveside Service is at 11am on Thursday, July 20, 2023 at Forest Lawn West Cemetery, 4601 Freedom Drive in Charlotte.
