Born on June 28, 1941, in Springfield, Illinois, Tim was the first in his family to attend college, earning his B.S. and M.S. from Illinois State University, followed by his Ph.D. in psychology from Florida State University. His passion for education and child development led him to a lifelong career as a school counselor, child psychologist, and professor at Southern Illinois University, Virginia Tech, and Fayetteville State University. He was especially proud of his research in early childhood education, where he explored the connections between self-concept, locus of control, and academic achievement. Tim had a gift for teaching and counseling, often blending his professional work with his love of nature, walking his counseling patients through his gardens and beside his koi ponds during sessions.
A tireless worker from a young age, Tim held many jobs in his youth—from farmhand to railroad painter—experiences that inspired his pursuit of higher education. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Tim was happiest with his hands in the dirt or tending to the living creatures he loved. He created beautiful gardens and koi ponds in both Fayetteville and Charlotte, each one a sanctuary for his beloved fish, who often multiplied under his care. His aquariums were legendary, from a saltwater tank so ambitious it nearly set the house on fire, to the famed fish tank table that left visitors in awe.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Linda D. Flynn; daughters Jennifer Schmidt (Stephen) and Emily O’Malley (Sam Seymour); grandchildren Andrew and Kathryn Schmidt, and Flynn O’Malley; as well as step-grandchildren Isabella, Luke, and Bianca Seymour.
Tim is also survived by his siblings Richard Flynn, Sharon Veara, John Flynn, Marjorie Norris, and Dennis Flynn.
He was predeceased by his siblings Robert Flynn and Patricia Richardson.
Tim’s family finds comfort in knowing he lived a full life of learning, nurturing, and laughter. His legacy lives on not only in his family and students but also in the quiet beauty of the gardens he created and the lessons he instilled about finding fulfillment from within.
A celebration of Tim's life is scheduled for 1pm on Tuesday, September 2, 2025 at McEwen Funeral Service - Pineville Chapel located at 10500 Park Road in Charlotte.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Tim's name to NPR or PBS to support public radio and television, or the American Cancer Society.
