He was born in Athens, GA, the oldest son of Elbert T. Shellhorse and Agnes S. Shellhorse, both preceding him in death. His wife of 25 years, Dr. Yovonne Jones Shellhorse, also preceded him in death.
Victor received a Mechanical Engineering degree from Georgia Tech University in Atlanta, and an MBA from the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. He was employed by Duke Power, and then Duke Energy, during a career that spanned four decades. His degree in mechanical engineering served him well for the first half of his career, when he worked on the design of both nuclear and fossil fueled power facilities. His MBA degree enabled him to develop his executive management skills and track the company's evolution in unregulated markets, including business and project development roles in the firm's engineering services, independent power and structured finance units. Victor's most enduring contribution can be found in the numerous engineering and finance professionals whom he mentored, counseled and nurtured. In business, as in life, Victor was a model of discipline, patience and integrity.
In recent years he was a consultant to several alternative energy-based power companies. He was registered as a Professional Engineer in North and South Carolina. He enjoyed athletic endeavors, especially biking, and participating in triathlons, and spent many hours working in his beautiful garden.
Victor is survived by his wife of seven years, Kathleen Prokay, of Charlotte and brother, Randy Shellhorse of Camden, MI and wife Susan; two aunts, Marie Worley of Dandridge, TN and Virginia Womack of New Port Richey, FL; one uncle, Carlton Sumner of New Port Richey, FL, as well as three step children: Kecia Newman and husband Dean, and their daughter Kashmira of Ellicott City, Maryland, and Ryan Prokay and Karah Prokay, both of Charlotte.
A memorial service to celebrate Victor’s life will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church on Tuesday, April 16th, at 2 pm. The family will receive friends in the Church Parish Hall afterwards. Interment will be private.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to all his caregivers over the past several years for their excellent care, support, and friendship, especially Dr. Asim Amin, Denise Hogan, Dr. Rob Heyer, and the Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Southminster staff.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Southminster, 8919 Park Rd., Charlotte, NC 28210; to the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden, 6500 S. New Hope Rd., Belmont, NC 28012; or to St. John’s Episcopal Church, 1623 Carmel Rd., Charlotte, NC 28226.
