Victoria "Vicki" Curlin Roberson

Vicki, 78, passed away Sunday, March 26, 2023 at Atrium Health Pineville in South Charlotte, NC. She was surrounded by her loving family in the days leading up and was treated by the devoted care of the hospital staff.

Born October 7, 1944 in Union City, TN, Vicki was the second daughter of the late Peter Buchanan Curlin and Mary Hamblin Hudgins. Following graduation from Hillsboro High School in Nashville, TN, she attended the University of Kentucky and finished her education at Georgia State University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology. She began her career as a school teacher in the Atlanta area where she taught 7th grade English before moving into insurance. She became an insurance underwriter in 1975 with Royal Globe Insurance, from which she took early retirement in 1996 as a Branch Underwriting Manager. She continued in the same role with Liberty Mutual until her diagnosis of sphenoidal sinus cancer in 2001.

Vicki was a women’s rights activist in the 70’s and 80’s. She continued her volunteering spirit in the 90’s during the AIDS outbreak by showing support of local gay and lesbian chapters working to spread awareness of the cause and prevention.

The joy of Vicki’s life was her family. She adored her life partner, Karen Van Vleet, whom she met in 1988. She was also a devoted mother and grandmother. Her specialty was picking out special gifts from garage sales for everyone in the family – a “GSF” (garage sale find) could be the best treasure!

Vicki is survived by Karen Van Vleet of Charlotte; her three children, Kelley Hikade of Memphis, Shelby Roberson of Orlando and Anna Brown of Raleigh; her five beloved grandchildren, Chloe Willis, Abraham Wheeler, Benjamin Brown, Mary Brown and Samantha Brown; as well as her sister, Jane Smith of Nashville, TN.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Suzanne de Josselin de Jong of Oakville, Ontario, Canada.

A service to celebrate Vicki’s life will be held in Memphis, TN on Saturday, June 10th – time and location to be announced at a later date.
