October 6, 1931- May 26, 2016
Vivian Jarvis Macaulay of Charlotte closed her eyes and met her Savior Jesus Christ at CMC Pineville on May 26, 2016.
Vivian was born October 6, 1931 into a family of twelve (12) children in Timber Ridge, just outside of Lexington, VA. As the only girl in the family, Vivian was both prized and adored as well as independent and determined. She worked several years after high school to help pay her way to attend Erskine College (Class of 1957). While there, she met her future husband, William (Bill) Macaulay, a student at Erskine Seminary, whom she married six years later. After college, she worked as secretary at Centennial A.R.P. Church in Columbia SC and then later in the Registrar’s Office at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in Lexington. In marriage, Vivian was a devoted and dedicated partner. She selflessly worked to put her husband through a second seminary degree, typed his thesis, was unpaid secretary in his churches, and gracefully fulfilled all of the duties associated with being a minister’s wife. But her greatest dedication was in her devotion to and caring for her three children. While her husband toured as a Chaplain in Vietnam, Vivian raised her children alone. While Proverbs 31 speaks of the “noble wife” and "blessed mother,” Vivian raised these standards even higher. She always put her children and family first, even if it meant sacrificing her own health. Our family rejoices that, “Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: ‘Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.’”
Vivian is survived by: her husband of fifty-six years, Dr. William A. Macaulay Jr. of Tega Cay, SC, son David J. Macaulay of Fort Mill, SC (wife Margaret, and their children, Sarah, Will, Elizabeth & Alex), daughter Cynthia Larson of Spotsylvania, VA (husband Toby, and their children, Acacia, Tolly, Lena, Clare and Ethan), son Dr. John A. Macaulay of Washington, DC, her lone surviving brother, Curtis Jarvis of Lexington VA. Also, sisters-in-laws: Vivian Kerr Jarvis of Lexington, VA, Vivian Morrison Jarvis of Stuarts Draft VA., and Betty Jarvis of Lexington, VA.
Visitation will take place at McEwen Funeral Home Pineville, Saturday evening, May 28, from 6-8 pm. A Memorial Service will be held at Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, Rea Road, Charlotte, NC on Sunday, May 29, at 2 pm. A second visitation will take place at Harrison Funeral Home in Lexington, VA on Friday, June 3 from 6-8 PM. Funeral and burial services will be held Saturday, June 4, at 2 pm at Timber Ridge A.R.P.
