William “Bill” Howie Crane Sr. passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 at the age of 88. Bill was born on April 2, 1936 in Charlotte, NC to the late Mary and Henry Crane. Bill was preceded in death by the love of his life, Sally Ann Crane and his son William (Buddy) Howie Crane Jr. He was also preceded in death by his brother Houston Crane and his first wife Dolores Graham.
As an original Charlottean, Bill spent his early years delivering groceries for Crane’s Grocery Store, owned by his father. Growing up in Third Ward, and what is now Southend, Bill would often describe how the city had changed so much throughout his lifetime; he never missed an opportunity to describe historic landmarks. Bill continued to deliver goods and then served as a supervisor for Howell’s Motor Freight, where he worked for over 40 years. Upon retirement, he could be found putting the boat in on Lake Norman, tinkering with his projects in the garage, and listening to the waves crash at Holden Beach. Bill loved classic cars and the Lord. He served as an active member of Moores Chapel of United Methodist Church as an usher and trustee.
A kind and gentle man, Bill was called ‘friend’ by many people who not only loved, but respected him. The family has heard countless stories of how he helped members of the community with his generosity. Bill lived a faithful life and put God first. He showed us all what it meant to be a wonderful father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was loving and told the corniest jokes.
We are all blessed to have had Bill in our lives, and we will cherish our memories. Affectionately known as “Pop,” he will be lovingly remembered by his children, Cathy, Chris (Jill), Andy (Amy) and his "bonus" daughter Deborah (Paul). He was “Paw Paw” to his grandchildren Heather (Corwin), Rusty, Ivy (Nick), Randi, Kyle (Tonya), Cole, Christopher, Heather and Dan (Topaz) . He will be cherished by his great grandchildren Corinne, Gracie, Blake, Jacy, and Gavin. He will also be affectionately remembered by nieces, nephews, and close friends, other relatives.
A visitation for William will be held Tuesday, October 8, 2024 from 12:00 PM until the time of his funeral service at 2:00 PM in the sanctuary of Moores Chapel Church, 10601 Moores Chapel Road, Charlotte, NC. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Condolences may be submitted at www.forestlawnwest.com.
