Born on July 26, 1940, Merle was the son of William ("Bill") and Cora Holtzclaw of Ware Shoals, SC. After graduating from North Mecklenburg High School in 1958, he attended Kings College and Charlotte College (now UNCC).
Merle served six years in the United States Army Reserve. He worked at S&W Cafeteria and Charlotte Letter Writing before becoming a supervisor at Aeronautical Marine Products (AMP). Merle retired from AMP after 30 years of dedicated service.
Merle enjoyed gardening and photography. His love of fishing and boating, was highlighted by his Friday night quest for the “perfect” seafood platter. This attention to detail was evident in the tasks he taught himself - thoroughly researching and completing the process with precision. A man of his word, Merle cared deeply, but privately.
A shy love note in 7th grade led to 41 year marriage to Jean Huddleston Holtzclaw. After losing her to cancer, Merle remained solely devoted to her memory. He cherished their children, feeling immensely blessed by their Christian values and servants’ hearts. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought easy smiles, lighting his face with joy.
He is lovingly remembered by his surviving children: Timothy Merle Holtzclaw (Angie), Jeremy Brent Holtzclaw; Sister, Jennie Holtzclaw; Grandchildren: Hailey Brown (Palmer), Allie Acquaah (Emmanuel), Landon, Chandler, & Lilly Holtzclaw, and Jeremy Allen Holtzclaw; Great-grandchildren: Lucy & Abby Brown, and Owen, Jadon & Isaiah (twins), and Aiden Acquaah.
Predeceasing Merle are his wife Jean, and daughter Aimee Phillips (Chuck).
A graveside service will be held Saturday, October 11, 2025 at 2:00 PM by McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC 28212.
