It is with deep sorrow that the family of William (Bill) Lee Murphy announces his peaceful passing on Sunday, March 2nd, 2025, at the age of 86. Bill’s life was one of dedication, love, and joy, and he will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Born on September 23rd, 1938, in Durham, North Carolina, Bill graduated from Durham High School in 1956. Shortly after, in 1957, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. His service took him to Japan for his first two years, where he served as an MC, traveling to various Air Force bases and entertaining the troops with his humor and uplifting spirit. His performances brought joy and comfort to his fellow servicemen during challenging times. Bill later served at Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, Florida, for the last two years of his military career, continuing his dedicated service to his country. It was in Panama City that Bill met the love of his life, Jackie, and they were married on August 20th, 1960 on the Tyndall Air Force Base—a union that would last 64 beautiful years.
After their marriage, Bill and Jackie moved to North Carolina, where they lived in several small towns in the eastern part of the state before settling in Charlotte in 1969. Bill worked as a claims adjuster for EMC, where he built a long and successful career, retiring after 30 years of dedicated service. Always a man of ambition, Bill also pursued his education, attending classes at night to earn his Associate of Arts degree from Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC).
Bill was a man of many passions. He loved to travel, with his trips to North Myrtle Beach for the Society of Stranders (SOS) being some of his happiest memories. Whether it was enjoying the sun or dancing the night away to his favorite beach music, those trips were a true reflection of his spirit. Bill also had a love for golf, often spending time on the green with his friends and church buddies. Above all, he cherished his time with his family, whose love and laughter were the cornerstones of his life.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Jackie Murphy; his three children, Dreama (Rocky), Tim (Tracy), and Billy; as well as his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom held a special place in his heart. His kindness, wisdom, and unwavering love for his family will forever be cherished.
A visitation to honor Bill’s life will be held on Saturday, March 15th, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Wilson Funeral and Cremation Service, located at 5301 Albemarle Road, Charlotte, NC 28212-3611. A memorial service will follow from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, where friends and family can gather to celebrate the extraordinary life of a truly special man.
His legacy of love, laughter, and joy will continue to inspire all who knew him. May he rest in peace, forever in our hearts.
