Y’Phil “Phil” Kbuor was born April, 1 1988 in the Cambodian jungle. Phil spent most of his life in Charlotte, NC with family always surrounding him. He departed this life on Tuesday, June 28, 2016. Even though he was not baptized, Phil was a loving servant of Jesus Christ.
Growing up, Phil loved the cartoon Dragon Ball-Z, a fictional Japanese cartoon. He was mesmerized by the character Goku. Goku was an eccentric, monkey-tailed boy who practices martial arts and posses super human strength. Phil would spend hours in front of a mirror putting gel in his hair to look just like Goku.
Phil is an out-going, sarcastic, charming man. His personality can light up a room in just a matter of seconds. If you had a long face he would find ways to make you laugh. He would make jokes that weren’t funny, but you would be in tears because of the sound of his laughter was just enough.
Phil was also an amazing artist. He spent much of his time sketching anything that inspired him. He found an inner peace drawing. This became his way of getting away from the days problems. Phil’s first job was selling his sketches of his friends loved one’s in the community.
Growing up, Phil was very shy. Even though Phil was the older brother and understood how to speak English, Phin would have to interpret all of Phil’s wants and needs to family and friends.
Phil was extremely protective of his family. While the family was living in the jungle to escape the Communist, Phil was only three years old. After years of reaching out to the United Nations, the family’s prayers were finally answered. The United Nation forces came to rescue the Kbuor’s and all 200 families that were living in the jungle. The day the U.N. forces approached Phin and his Mom, Phil ran up with his flip flops in hands to scare away all of the soldiers that were there to help. Even at 3 years old, Phil was NOT afraid of anything.
The most important thing to Phil was his family. Phil would do anything for them. There were many nights that Phil’s Mom and Dad would come home late at night from work and Phil would be waiting at home to make sure his parents had a warm meal to eat. Phil constantly talked about how much he missed and loved his son Leovon. Phil wanted and would do anything he could do to be a provider for Leovon. As Phil’s spirit continues to grace us, Phil will first and foremost watch over Leovon as he grows up to be a strong, intelligent young man.
Phil leaves behind the proud parents of K’Jong Long Ding and Y’Briet Kbuor, sister Phin Kbuor Scallan, son, Leovon Thaiven Kbuor, God parents, Charles and Glenda Overstreet. Although he has left this earth he will always be with us in spirit.
All donations in Phil's honor can be sent to Y'Briet Kbuor at 6813 Glenmoor Dr. Charlotte, NC 28214
