Cliff was born in Yonkers, New York, and spent his early childhood in the Bronx, until his family moved to New Jersey. These roots cultivated a passion for family, people, and food. To have known Cliff Riso was to know laughter, love, and good pizza.
He graduated from West Virginia University, where he met, and married his wife, Peggy, in 1980. The couple moved to Minneapolis, Minn., where they started their family with the birth of their three sons, before settling in Charlottesville, Va., and where they had their daughter.
Cliff’s love of people and food transcended to all aspects of his life, including his career, garnering him over 30 years in the hospitality and food industry. At the close of his career he was the beloved owner of our local B&R market.
What brought the most joy to his life was God, his family, and being an active member of our Charlottesville community. Most notably he loved coaching his children in various youth sports, being an official with the Piedmont Basketball Officials Association (where he won the iron man award). He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus – where he enjoyed spending time serving catfish at the Albemarle County Fair, and volunteering for the Columbus Hope Drive, passing out tootsie rolls. Cliff was always helping people and there was never a stranger he didn’t know.
Cliff is survived and forever loved by his wife, Peggy; sons, Michael, Matthew, Andrew and his wife, Jennie; and daughter, Catherine. He will also be missed by his brother, three sisters, his many nieces and nephews, extended family, and close friends.
A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 7, 2018, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, February 6, 2018, at Teague Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions in Cliff’s name be made to Little Sisters of the Poor, littlesistersofthepoorvirginia.org or the American Cancer Society, cancer.org.
Condolences and memories may be shared with the family at teaguefuneralhome.com.
“God Speed, good and faithful servant”.
