

David Jerome McCarthy, Jr., 85, a resident of Albemarle County, VA, died October 1, 2020 at the Hospice of the Piedmont after an extended illness. He was the loving husband of Mary McCarthy, with whom he shared 60 years of marriage.
David was a graduate of Fairfield University (B.A. with Honors) and Georgetown University Law Center (J.D. and LL.M.). He had a long and highly respected career as a Law Professor as well as eight years as Dean and Executive Vice President for Law Center Affairs at Georgetown. He was co-author of a Local Government Casebook and the Local Government Nutshell. In retirement, David continued sharing his legal expertise teaching in a life-long learning program at UVA.
He was predeceased by his younger brother Gerald, his daughters Emilie and Katherine, his granddaughter, Madeline, and his son-in-law, Rickey Ward. He is survived by his wife, Mary McCarthy, his daughters, Mary Ward and Carolyn McCarthy, his sons-in-law Matthew Richey and Randy Pack, 4 grandchildren, and a great-grandson.
