Edward Morris, age 87, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born on August 21, 1938, in Albemarle County, VA, Edward lived a life defined by hard work, strength, and perseverance.
He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Dorothy H. Morris, whom he dearly loved. Left to cherish his memory are the children that he adored, Michael Edward Morris, Faith Angela Brill (Dwight Brill) and Holly Morris Carden (Eddie Carden). He took great pride in his grandchildren, Dr. Kaitlin Speake (Dr. Thomas Speake), Lieutenant Kendra Arias (Petty Officer 1st Class Gabriel Arias), Kelly Womack (Pastor Jake Womack), Trenton Carden and Marlaina (Lainey) Carden. In recent years, he had great joy brought to him by his 11 great-grandchildren: Luka and Evalyn Speake; Kade and Aviana Arias; and Noah, Cohen, Mayanne, Sophia, Benjamin, Jeremiah and Ephraim Womack.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Brinton and Martha Roach Morris; one brother, Wilmer Morris; and one sister, Louise O. Shifflett.
Eddie lived his entire life in Greene County at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains except for a short period of time during his teen years, when his family relocated to York, PA. While in York, Eddie was able to spend quality time with his cousins that he dearly loved, Clarence Morris and Nelvin Morris.
At the age of 19, Eddie went to work for the University of Virginia. There he spent 52 years caring for the historic buildings and grounds of the University. He became dearly loved across the campus, remembered for his dedication to the University, his tireless work ethic, and the laughter he shared with his co-workers.
During his retirement years, Eddie enjoyed being outside as much as possible. He and his wife, Dorothy, enjoyed attending Nortonsville Church of God and loved working with friends and family doing one of their favorite activities, making apple butter. He and Dorothy would occasionally visit Shiloh Church of the Brethren where he was baptized in Middle River which is right across the road.
Our loving father found joy in hunting with his prize-winning beagle dogs and took special pride in cultivating the best garden in the area. He will be forever remembered for his love of all the children and babies in our family. He was a man of few words, but his actions – always willing to help neighbors, friends and his family told the story of a man with strong character.
The family would like to thank Melissa Morris Estes and Lori Duggins, for your loving care of our Dad over the last few months. We truly believe that you brought so much joy to his life on a daily basis and we have been blessed by you. Special thanks to his dear neighbor and cousin, Geneva Shifflett for being such a bright light during this time.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11am on Monday, December 22, 2025 at the Nortonsville Church of God in Dyke, VA, with his final resting place at Holly Memorial Gardens in Charlottesville, VA. The family will receive friends before the service from 10:00am-10:45am.
