Edwin J. Adam of Charlottesville, Virginia passed away on April 20, 2023 surrounded by family. He was an intelligent, positive, inquisitive and caring man who put family first and was always willing to help others.
He was born in 1929 in Newark, New Jersey, the son of the late Edwin and Elsie Adam. He grew up in Newark and graduated from Weequahic High School in 1947. In October, 1956 he married the love of his life – Anne Adam in Elizabeth, New Jersey. They shared an incredible marriage for 66 years. In 1963, they moved to Bridgewater, New Jersey where they resided until 2000.
Ed began his career at New Jersey Bell before serving in the U.S. Army as a combat engineer. After completing Basic Training at Ft. Hood, Texas he was stationed in Germany. After his discharge, Ed returned to New Jersey Bell. In 1959, he graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in Business Management. Ed had a long and successful career with various Bell operating companies. After initially retiring, he worked 10 more years as a project management consultant.
He devoted time and energy to numerous community and civic endeavors. He served on the Bridgewater Board of Adjustment and then as a Councilman on the Town Council for 8 years. He also volunteered and served on the Board of Directors for various community organizations in both Bridgewater and later in Crozet, Virginia, where he and Anne resided from 2000 to 2014.
Ed’s great love of the outdoors was passed on to his family and those around him. He enjoyed long walks, hiking, camping, canoeing and much more. An avid reader and learner, Ed always had a book in progress on history, current affairs, and more. In his 50’s he challenged himself to become a private pilot and he enjoyed flying for many years.
Throughout their lives, Ed and Anne were blessed to be part of a large and close family on both sides that brought them much joy and happiness over the years, as did their many friends in New Jersey, Virginia and North Carolina.
Ed’s happiest moments were spent with his family whom he dearly loved. Next to that, a good meal was always a memorable event for him. He had an uncanny ability to recall where he was 30 or 40 years ago, who he dined with and exactly what he ate.
He is survived by his loving wife Anne of Charlottesville, VA, son and daughter-in-law Michael and Rebecca Wrenn Adam of Charlottesville, VA, grandson Ryan Adam of Washington, D.C., and many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, May 27 at Teague Funeral Home, 2260 Ivy Road Charlottesville, VA. The family will host a reception and dinner immediately following the service at The Boars Head Inn, 200 Ednam Drive, Charlottesville, VA.
