
She was born on October 10, 1933, in Spring Valley of Albemarle County, Virginia to the late Aubrey L. Kent and Effie Tomlin Kent. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Smith, three sisters; Joyce Mawyer, Ann Kent Fischer, Dorothy Mawyer, and her brother Thomas Kent.
Grace is survived by her sons; James A. Smith and his wife, Tammy of Faber, VA, and D. Kevin Smith and his wife, Cheryl of Palmyra, VA., five grandchildren; Jason Smith and his wife Christine, Shelly Smith, Megan Smith, Emily Smith, Will Smith and his wife Angela, and six great grandchildren; Logan, Nolan, Hannah, Colton, Harrison, and Lincoln. She is also survived by brother-in-law Thomas Thompson and his wife Joyce and numerous nieces and nephews.
Grace graduated from Red Hill High School and immediately began a ten year employment with State Farm Insurance Company. She was later employed by the UVA Health Service Foundation for twenty years, retiring in 1997. After retirement she remained active in the health industry by becoming a volunteer at the UVA Children’s Medical Center, and the Senior Center in Charlottesville. Grace’s favorite pastime was reading books with a wide range of topics. She was affectionately labeled “bookworm” by her family as she read hundreds of books each year. Grace was a longtime member of Bybee Road Baptist Church.
A graveside service will be held at 2pm on Wednesday July 13, 2022 at Holly Memorial Gardens in Charlottesville.
