James was born in Martinsville, VA on May 10, 1952, to the late Dewey P. Cashwell Sr., and Betty Louise Cashwell.
James is survived by his brother Dewey P. Cashwell, Jr. and his niece Erika Trent.
James was retired from the University of Virginia's facility maintenance department, having worked there for many years.
Jim grew up his first 10 years, in Martinsville, VA. He had many friends there and enjoyed running and playing from yard to yard, and on the sand lot ball field on Myrtle Road. He was a good athlete from an early age and loved sports, BBQ Chef, as well as fishing.
Jim moved with his family to Charlottesville in 1962, and soon fell in love with the city. He really became part of Charlottesville through his time spent in school here, especially his time at Lane High School. Jim worked part time for his father in the small store his dad managed downtown, and also went to work for Jim Beck Plumbing Services, where he gained life long skills that enabled him to later enlist in the U. S. Navy at a high initial rank. Jim was very proud of his military service, where he sailed on the USS John F. Kennedy aircraft carrier throughout his term of service. Following his honorable discharge he returned to Charlottesville and worked again for Beck Plumbing until he found a new position at the University of Virginia, where he became a supervisor in facility maintenance. Jim later retired from UVA and settled into his retirement among his many friends until his passing. Jim was very proud of his service to UVA and Mr. Jefferson's University, and dedicated himself to a high degree of excellence in work on the school's facilities.
He will be missed by many friends, and by his brother, who was very dear to him.
A visitation for James will be held Wednesday, April 23, 2025 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. A funeral service will occur Thursday, April 24, 2025 at 1:00 PM at Teague Funeral Service. An interment will occur at Monticello Memory Gardens.
