James (Jim) Edward Haney of Palmyra, VA born to the late Mr. Herbert J Haney and Margaret E (Mawyer) Haney of Charlottesville VA, passed away peacefully at the age of 79 on Easter morning after a valiant battle with lung cancer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his younger brother Alvin Ray “Shine” Haney, who died February 21, 2023 near Atlanta GA.
Jim was survived by his wife Alice Thomas Haney, brother in law Ken Thomas and his wife of Stuarts Draft VA, many cousins, nephews and nieces.
While Jim was born and lived in Charlottesville, he spent much of his time on his uncle’s farms. He was very proud of what he learned to do there, a list too extensive to complete.
In 1964, Jim voluntarily chose to enlist in the United States Air force. After two temporary tours of duty in Ben Hoa Vietnam, he came back to Charlottesville, VA on leave where he met his soon to be bride, Alice Thomas. After a whirlwind courtship, they married in January of 1969, shortly after they left for Delaware to Dover Air Force base. On June 6th, 1973, their only child, Michael Haney was born in Okinawa, Japan.
After a 28 year career full of many adventures and assignments, and reaching the coveted and rarely achieved rank of that time as a Chief Master Sergeant, he retired at the end of 1991. Jim and Alice returned back to their beloved Virginia, settling in Fluvanna County for 30 years. Their son Michael Haney, and grandson Joshua Haney were close by in Fork Union VA. Alice will always miss her husband of 54 years.
There will be a memorial service held at the Fluvanna Baptist Church off of Route 6 led by Pastor Alan Acree on Saturday May 27, 2023 at 2:00pm with inurnment at Holly Memorial Gardens, Saturday, June 10, 2023 at 2:00pm.
