Janet R. Holt, 72, “Kitch” of Charlottesville, Virginia passed away on July 22, 2025, after a long battle with cancer. She was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut to Ann Edwardson Holt and Cayford Elliot Holt. She spent her childhood years in Easton, Connecticut and attended Staples Elementary School, Helen Keller Middle School, and Joel Barlow High School.
Kitch had a love of animals from the beginning. She was always bringing frogs, snakes, turtles, and other animals in from the wild. Her real passion was horses. She joined the 4H club at an early age spending a lot of her time at the High Lonesome Stables or attending many events in the area including those at the Sweetbrier Farms on Sport Hill Road. She was pretty good with horses taking home quite a few ribbons. When she wasn’t riding, she spent time exploring the nearby swamps or trekking through the cow pastures behind the neighbor’s house. She also active in ballet, played the base guitar, and played the piano.
After attending Barlow, she moved to Charlottesville, Virginia living in a small cabin by a pond, first working at the University of Virginia, later managing small farms in the area. She later moved into a larger home with her mother Ann on the outskirts of Charlottesville when Ann decided to move to Virginia after the passing of Ann’s mother Julia.
She had a good life living out the dream of having a nice farm with her place in the hills outside Charlottesville. She had horses, dogs, cats, cows, chickens, and lots of birds. She also got into selling used books and antiques at local Antique Malls specializing in the Mid-Century Modern style. It was a lot of work feeding all the animals and taking care of all the other activities, but it was what she wanted. Her greatest joys in life were her son and grandson.
She is survived by her brother Mark Holt, her son Robert Fitzgerald, her grandson Aries Fitzgerald, her niece Raj-ann Rekhi, and her nephew Benjamin Rekhi.
A memorial service will be at Teague Funeral Home on Ivy Road in Charlottesville on August 1 from 1:00pm to 3pm.
