Joe was born and raised in Ambridge, PA,to the late Robert, Sr. and Helen (Sabol) Kopp. Fortunately, he survived getting hit by a car when he was 8 though he sported a scar over his right eye as a reminder of his close call.
He graduated from Ambridge High School in 1954 and served in the US Air Force at Langely AFB from 1954-1958. After the military he graduated from Penn State University with a B.S. in Business
Administration in 1961. He became a CPA and eventually Vice President at Lectromelt, a steel fabricating plant, in Pittsburgh, PA, where his work included extensive international travel. He went on as a District Director of the Small Business Administration in Pittsburgh, Charlotte, NC and Wilmington, DE from 1983 until his retirement in 2001.
Joe also dabbled in local politics when he was elected Commissioner of the 4th Ward in Mt. Lebanon, PA in the early '80's and was on library boards in Mt. Lebanon, PA, Wilmington, DE and Mathews, VA.
Due to their love of history, Joe and Joanne landed in Charlottesville, VA in 2011. In order to keep busy during his retirement years he was active in the Tree Stewards, Cherry Hills HOA, the Citizen Police Academy plus he loved attending numerous functions in and around the local area.
Joe loved: a good laugh (Roseanne Roseannadanna would have him in tears), beer (any kind if it was cold), wine (two buck Chuck anyone?), visiting museums and art galleries, American history, perusing antique stores or flea markets, his many pets throughout the years, music (jazz and classical), singing (he had a great Sinatra style voice), a good "shortcut" (where the hell are we??), the Pittsburgh Steelers, completing handyman projects (though they may take a while), books (sooo many books), brochures (sooo many brochures), meeting new people and mingling, and he really loved a good bargain!
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joanne; son Peter and daughter-in-law, Cheri, of the Seattle, WA area; nephews Tom and Bob, Chris and niece Heidi. His daughter, Pam, passed away in 2015. He was also predeceased by his brothers Robert Jr. (2015), Richard (2012) and nephew Jim (2020).
His family would like to thank the staff at Reminiscence Memory Care at The Colonnades and Hospice of the Piedmont for Joe's care and support at the end of his life.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Charlottesville chapter of the Alzheimer's Association or Hospice of the Piedmont would be appreciated.
Remembrance/service arrangements are pending (likely in the spring of 2023).
Joe was a good man. He will be missed.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.teaguefuneralhome.com for the Kopp family.
