Born in Johnstown, New York to the late John Paul Siedlecki and Dorothy Hall on July 30, 1946, Alex attended Johnstown High School where he was a three-sport Varsity athlete playing football, basketball, and baseball. Alex matriculated to St. Lawrence University and continued his athletic career as a Varsity football player. Alex excelled on both sides of the ball as a running/tail back on offense and a middle linebacker on defense. Subsequent to graduating from St. Lawrence, Alex initially took a position as a math teacher at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School in New York. He loved inspiring young adults and always exhibited a proclivity for math. He then moved on to a finance position with General Electric where he remained and thrived for over 30 years. While at GE, Alex traveled, consulted, and studied for three years as a member of GE’s prestigious Corporate Audit Staff. As part of this elite training ground for future executives, Alex audited GE business units worldwide, rotated into leadership roles in finance and operations, and reported findings to senior management. Alex ultimately graduated number one in his audit class. During his decades-long tenure with General Electric, Alex and his family moved multiple times, living in Schenectady, New York, Cincinnati, Ohio, and finally settling in Charlottesville, Virginia where Alex served as GE’s Chief Controller. After retiring from GE, Alex worked as a financial consultant for Capital One in Richmond, Virginia and then for UVA’s Office of Sponsored Programs, helping the University secure research grants and sponsored funding.
Alex is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Jane, his son, Dr. John Siedlecki (wife Dawn Siedlecki), his daughter, Andrea Siedlecki Townsend, Esq. (husband Keith Townsend), his four granddaughters, Meghan Siedlecki (UGA ‘21), Erin Siedlecki (UVA ‘22, UVA MSDS ‘26), Peyton Townsend (UVA ‘26, Law ‘29), and Madison Townsend (UVA ‘29), as well as his older sister, Joanna Steenburgh, and younger brother, Jack Siedlecki.
Alex loved spending time with his family, playing golf and poker, traveling with his wife, and attending and watching UVA football and basketball games as well as his granddaughters’ sporting events. He was a remarkable, beloved, and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and most proud of his children’s and grandchildren’s professional, academic, and athletic accomplishments.
