Lorn L. Dumont (1927- 2023) passed away peacefully on December 6, 2023 at the age of 96. Lorn was born and raised on a potato and dairy farm in Van Buren, Maine as the eldest son of thirteen children to Omer and Marguerite Dumont. In 1949, he married the love of his life, Leola Jean Daigle, a marriage that lasted 63 years until Leola’s death at age 84. After his childhood job of rolling potato barrels, Lorn entered the construction field and rose to a Carpentry Superintendent for J.W. Bateson Company. The position required relocation every eighteen months or so, as he built VA Hospitals, Federal Buildings including the DC Department of Labor, and even the Wolf Trap Amphitheater. With these project changes came the not so easy task of moving an ever-growing family around the country in a station wagon. A feat that became more and more challenging as with each state seemingly came another child. Ultimately, the family resided in California, Delaware, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. Packed in that reliable station wagon with no seat belts, the Dumont’s traveled across the US. Their camping trips and historical adventures are captured through thousands of slides that the family cherished viewing together. Lorn also served as scoutmaster and his children earned the ranks of Eagle, Life, Star, 1st Class, and 2nd Class. The camp (lake house) in Maine was a special place for the Dumont family and the source of countless memories. In later years, Lorn and Leola built a new camp on the lake. There they enjoyed taking friends and family out on their party boat looking for bald eagles and loons, gathering for very competitive Charlemagne card games, and hosting parties where everyone spoke French. After retiring from Bateson, Lorn and Leola found their forever home in Falls Church, Virginia. There the extended family celebrated very lively Thanksgivings which the family will miss dearly. In their next career, Lorn and Leola opened The Country Peddler Antique Shop, traveling to antique shows each weekend while developing many close friendships. Lorn will be remembered as an exceptional sibling, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He loved to laugh and equally loved to eat. In fact, Lorn and Leola are probably sharing a banana box of Peanut M&Ms in heaven. The family would like to acknowledge Lorna Dumont Gellner, the forever caregiver, for watching over Daddy for these past years in Charlottesville. We are blessed to have her as our sister. Lorn was predeceased by his siblings Geraldine Dinsmore, Jeanette Donaghue, Lillian Dostie, Gertrude Michaud, Hilda Gardner, Claude Dumont, Henry Dumont, Armand Dumont, Gerard Dumont and Raymond Dumont. Lorn is survived by his siblings Pauline Daigle and Wilfred Dumont. Lorn and Leola were blessed with ten children. Surviving are Lewis (Mary) Dumont, Lee (Denise) Dumont, Lorna (Kurt) Gellner, Lane Dumont, Lester (Rhonda) Dumont, Lena Dumont (Gerry Field), Larry (Linda) Dumont, Loren Dumont. Lorn and Leola were predeceased by their children Lloyd and Linda Dumont. Lorn and Leola are survived by their grandchildren Jeremy (Marisa) Beck, Drew Dumont, Lara Dumont, Nathan (Shannon) Dumont, Brian Field, Matthew (Marissa) Dumont, Daniel Dumont (Brooke Ezelle), Philip Dumont and Nolan Field. Lorn was predeceased by his grandson Douglas Dumont and survived by his great grandchildren Kaaj, Ivy, and Bennett. Along with their son Larry, the Dumont genealogy was researched and documented. Countless hours were spent on this project and resulted in Larry publishing Filiation Genealogique des Gueret-Dumont. These 250 pages serve to preserve the Dumont heritage. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on March 28, 2024 at 10:00am in the Chapel of National Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 7482 Lee Hwy, Falls Church, VA 22042 with a graveside service to follow.
