

Mrs. Roberts was born on October 4, 1943 in Washington, DC, daughter of Robert Eugene Ludwig and Mary Anne Ford Ludwig. She was a graduate of Washington Lee High School in Arlington, VA, attended Randolph Macon Woman’s College and later graduated with a BA in English literature and a minor in art history from Columbia University. Mrs. Roberts held numerous secretarial positions over the course of her career, including working for the Cheshire (CT) Board of Education, Plymouth (CT) Board of Education and St. Anne’s-Belfield School (VA). She also started and managed her own company, Martha Roberts Business Services in the 1980’s, when it was not common for women to do such things. Mrs. Roberts was a long-time member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Cheshire, CT and St. Paul’s Ivy Episcopal Church in Charlottesville, VA. She was active in the Charlottesville and University of Virginia community: working at the UVA Medical Center Hospitality House, volunteering as an Adjunct Chaplain at UVA Health, and volunteering at the Charlottesville Senior Center.
Mrs. Roberts is survived by her two children, David Stewart Roberts III of Charlottesville, VA and his wife Rita of Taipei, Taiwan, and Benjamin Bates Roberts and his wife Rocio, and their children Joshua, Julie and Jonathan of Roanoke, Texas. She is also survived by her brother, Robert Sanford Ludwig and his wife Gwenyth Rankin, and their children Robert Bogan Ludwig, Emily Ludwig Serazin (Andrew), Susannah Ludwig (Anthony), Patricia Ludwig Chilton (Harrison), and Mary Anne Ludwig, along with numerous grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She is also survived by her nephews, David Roberts Winn and Daniel Hinsdale Winn. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Alice Pembroke Ludwig, her husband, David Stewart Roberts, Jr, her sisters-in-law Adah-Grace Roberts Vollmer and Marcia Holcomb Roberts Winn and her nephews Jonathan Witherspoon Winn and Peter Holcomb Winn.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 6th at 11am at St. Paul’s Ivy Episcopal Church in Charlottesville, with calling hours starting at 10 am. Memorial donations may be made to Albemarle County Fire Rescue or St. Paul’s Ivy Episcopal Church. Teague Funeral Home, Charlottesville is in charge of arrangements.
