

Nathaniel Alan Spaulding, 65, passed away in Charlottesville, VA, on Monday, July 20, 2020, after a decade-long battle with illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nathaniel Raymond and Virginia Forbes Spaulding, and his brother-in-law Kenneth Roger Bean.
Alan was born in Hampton on August 30, 1954. He grew up first in Hampton, then Newport News, graduating from Warwick High School in 1972 and Virginia Tech in 1976 with a BS in Forestry. He had a varied career, working in the forestry industry, Christian education, pulmonology, and as a financial advisor, where he found his niche. Alan loved to relax by sailing, especially in Hampton Roads and the York River.
Alan was a member of Boy Scout Troop 48 in Newport News, an eagle scout, and a member of Order of the Arrow. He and his sons enjoyed several years of Boy Scout activities with Troop 259 in Plano, TX.
Alan is survived by his wife, Susan Mahaffy Spaulding of Yorktown, VA, and his three sons: Nathaniel Patrick (MaryBeth) of Charlottesville, VA, Timothy Robert (Cindi) of Forest, VA, and Todd David (Nathacha) of West Columbia, SC. He is also survived by grandchildren Ezra, Ewan, and Eva Spaulding of Forest, VA, a granddaughter due in a few weeks, his sister Lynn Spaulding Bean of Newport News, VA, his cousin Martha Smart and her children of Ansonia, CT, his father-in-law Bob Mahaffy of Yorktown, VA, four brothers-in-law, four sisters-in-law, 16nieces and nephews (and spouses), and 24 great nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at a future date.
