Patricia M. “Patsy” Kennedy Hammel, 88, of Charlottesville passed away peacefully on October 7, 2020 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on February 21, 1932 in Weehawken, NJ to the late Bernadine G. (Lammers) Kennedy and W. Raymond Kennedy. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters; Kathleen A. Herbert, Carol E. Solas and Regina M. Agostine. Patricia is survived by her husband of an incredible 67 years, George F. Hammel of Charlottesville, VA and by five children; George and wife Rose of Vail AZ, James of Black Mountain NC, Kevin of CT, Maureen Chandler and husband Peter II of Earlysville VA and John and wife Susan of Hingham MA. She is also survived by her loving sister MaryEllen Murphy of PA. Additional survivors include: grandchildren; George Hammel VI, Sarah Hammel, Jarryd Hammel, Erik Hammel, Christy Harty and husband Rob, Peter Chandler III and wife Katie, Ben Chandler and wife Sandi, Michael Chandler and partner Erin, John Chandler and wife Charlotte, and Steven Chandler; three step-grandchildren; Andrew Tuccio and wife Shelby, Alex Tuccio and Hunter Tuccio; six great-grandchildren; Grace, Abby and Collin Harty; Claire, Olivia and Henley Chandler and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews and other extended family members. Previously living in Trumbull, CT for 45 years, she worked as the Administrative Assistant for the Director of the Trumbull Library before retiring in 1985 to devote her efforts to her family which she adored and cherished. She would spend many days at the beach at her Canoe Brook Lake home building priceless memories with children, family, friends and numerous doggies. She was a founding member of the Trumbull “Player Readers” group which put on Broadway plays using her neighborhood friends as the actors. She never learned to swim well herself, but she was very active in seeing that her five children were involved in the lake sports and proud to see the many trophies brought home to her from the competitions. During her severe and lengthy illness, she received moral and religious support from The Hospice of Piedmont, The Reverend Mario Calabrese and Mrs. Gwennette M. “Becky” Turner for which she was deeply indebted. Funeral services will be held at Teague Funeral Home on Monday, October 12, 2020 at 9 a.m., followed by a memorial mass at 11 a.m., at St Thomas Aquinas RC Church officiated by The Reverend Mario Calabrese. Interment will follow at St Vincent Ferrer Columbarium.
