Patricia Lou (Pat) Johnson Aschenbach Kohl, 88, of Harrisonburg (formerly of Charlottesville) died on Friday, October 21, 2022. Pat was born February 24, 1934 in Washington DC. She was the daughter of the late Hiram and Gladys Abramson Johnson and was also preceded in death by husband Ernest V. Aschenbach, daughter Susan Aschenbach, husband Norman C. Kohl, daughter Janis Kohl Marshall and son-in-law Dave Coyner.
Pat grew up in Washington and graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School in 1952. Soon after her marriage to Ernie Aschenbach in 1954, the couple relocated to Charlottesville where they raised their three children. She enjoyed the company of a wide circle of friends throughout her lifetime. As a charter member of Meadows Presbyterian Church of Charlottesville, Pat’s church family was very important to her and she developed many close and lasting friendships there. She was regularly involved in church activities and was an active member of the Joy Group.
After the loss of her first husband, Pat married Norman Kohl in 1969 and together they raised their blended family. The beloved matriarch of our family, Pat was a cancer survivor and our special “Dancing Queen.” She loved parties and celebrations and could really cut a rug. Pat danced the jitterbug and especially loved line dancing. Whenever the Electric Slide came on, she was always out front leading the group.
Pat was always up for travel. She enjoyed trips to spend time with relatives, beach vacations, visits to Miami and one very special trip to Guatemala. She worked at the Woodlands Daycare Center for many years, collected for the March of Dimes and was a longtime volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Pat thrived on organization and keeping everything on a schedule. Her home was always a welcoming place for family, her children’s friends and other visitors. No matter how many people showed up for Sunday dinners, they were always welcome to join the banter and fun. We all fondly remember her laugh.
Pat is survived by three daughters—Jennie Aschenbach Coyner of Harrisonburg, Suzanne Kohl Goldstein (Larry) of Crimora, and Bette Kohl Webber (Greg) of Charlottesville; two sons—Mark Ernest Aschenbach (Lesley) of Herndon and Joseph Andrew Kohl (Camilo) of Miami, FL; 11 grandchildren—Peter Tevendale (Andrea) of Hawley, PA, Heather Tevendale (Todd) of Brookhaven, GA, Amy Campbell Brueckner (deceased), Brooke Marshall of Philadelphia, PA, Kevin Coyner of Harrisonburg, Jessie Wagner (Lewis) of Palmyra, Laura Coyner of Harrisonburg, Amy Mays (Wayne) of Amherst, Briana Reid (Whitelaw) of Charlottesville, Jillian Aschenbach of Herndon, and Jenna Aschenbach of Leesburg; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Those wishing to honor the memory of Patricia may make a donation in her name to the American Cancer Society or a charity of their choice.
A funeral service will be held Friday, October 28, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Meadows Presbyterian Church, 2200 Angus Road, Charlottesville, followed by a reception at 2:00 PM. Interment will be at Holly Memorial Gardens in Charlottesville.
